From Picton & Nelson To Motueka

From Nelson, drive towards Richmond then follow the Coastal Highway past Mapua to Motueka. Enjoy a tour of art studios, galleries, cafés, and some 22 wineries along the way.

Tasman is the second-fastest growing region in New Zealand, popular for its long sunshine hours.

Motueka, with a population of 12,000, provides the last opportunity to stock up on supplies and camping gear before you head into the Abel Tasman National Park.

The alternative route between Richmond and Motueka is the inland Moutere highway, across the Waimea Plains and Moutere Hills through Upper and Lower Moutere.

There are regular bus services from Nelson, via Motueka to the Abel Tasman National Park.

Productive Tasman & Nelson

Between Richmond and Motueka lies some of the region's most fertile land. Export crops of apples, berries, hops and olives are grown and local olive oil can be sampled at some outlets.

In recent years viticulture has boomed and many boutique wineries offer cellar door tastings. Or visit one of the many cafés and enjoy the local fare.

Abel Tasman & Kahurangi National Parks

New Zealand's Abel Tasman National Park is renowned for its golden beaches and blue green sea.

Walk part or all of the Abel Tasman Coastal Track while you're here - one of New Zealand's great walks which wanders through bush to beautiful bays.

Or visit the beautiful bush clad tracks of the Kahurangi - walks here range from gentle strolls to high alpine hikes for the experienced, well equipped tramper.

Arts

Many galleries and open studios welcome visitors along the Coastal Highway or through the Moutere Inland Highway.

This is where you will find that special piece of pottery, that quirky sculpture or a fine landscape capturing the essence of the Nelson or Tasman regions.
